The Leylandii needs a water supply that is as constant as possible. It is not necessary to exaggerate the quantity but it is important to try not to create dangerous water changes or puddles. the main reason for this type of need lies in the fact that the Leylandii has a rather small root system and in order to obtain the necessary water it must always have slightly moist soil. Depending on the cultivation area, we will regulate above all with seasonal atmospheric rainfall which in some periods may be sufficient. If, on the other hand, the rains wait longer than a week, support is needed. The best type of irrigation system to use is the drip one, which guarantees watering at the base of the plant while preserving the aerial part. The best hours for these operations are after sunset or early in the morning.
How to take care of it
The Leylandii is a plant that comes from a cross between two species and belongs in all respects to the same cypress family. So it grows and develops exactly like a large tree, which can even reach 30m in height. The main defect of this hybridization is that the roots cannot play the role of support in case of strong winds or bad weather of great intensity. It is therefore recommended to carry out repeated seasonal pruning, keeping the foliage in order and trying to give it a geometric shape as well as limiting its natural upward development. There are two minimum prunings per year: one in spring and one in autumn. Obviously, we can also intervene several times, given that the Leylandii, indicatively, grows from 1m to 2m per year.
